What to do after you think your manuscript is ready

I’ve finished my first draft, so now I need a proofreader.

It is the email that makes my heart sink.

Yes, I know you have put a lot of effort into getting this far. But no, I’m not in the business of charging you loads of money for the sake of it.

Good editors are interested in doing a good job at the appropriate stage. That means you need a really good draft before you contact one of us.
