Not the origin of the Australian accent

Editing_and_proofreading_blog_552I’m a big fan of David Crystal. His latest post shows how easily the media pick up on a crazy story, like the idea that the origin of the Australian accent lies in the drunken speech of the first convicts.

When I was a corporation tax consultant, one of my colleagues had a stock phrase to use when someone objected to his colourful language. He used to say “I think you’ll find the expression in the Taxes Acts.”

I think now I’ve changed careers I’ll adopt the phrase “an ancient linguistic technical term” instead.
