Is crowd funding useful for authors?

I’ve helped with funding the all British made Shackleton banjo. Now they’ve got round to producing a 6 string version, it is only a matter of time before I’ll be buying one. I’m told that it is easy to learn the chords for a 5 string instrument, but I’m not taking that chance.
