Place names – the French influence

Editing_and_proofreading_blog_322Place names can tell us a lot about local history. Round these parts, in Yorkshire, many names have clear Viking influences. We have plenty of names that show our Anglo Saxon past, but relatively few showing French influence. The Norman Conquest made a huge difference to our language & culture, so why not our place names as well?
